A Manual On How To Set Up A Wireless Network

Wireless Networks are the talk of the town these days. They are convenient to use as they help us to operate without the use of wires. A wireless network gives you the freedom to take your laptop any place where the network follows.

But first things first- how to set up a wireless network?

To set up a wireless network, one has to be very careful because there are many security risks that need to be considered while setting them up in our homes or in an organization. The most important thing is to understand the basics involved in setting up a wireless network by placing the highest priority to security concerns. Since anyone with a receiver can access wireless signals, planning for security is a must.

There are many different types of protocols for various types of wireless networks. For example, if we want to build a wireless local area network for our home or office, we require 802.11b standard protocol for establishing the network. Protocols are actually a set of standard rules that two machines connected to a network are required to follow in order to share information between each other.

A wireless network consists of an access point which acts as a transmitter with an antenna to send and receive signals through a wireless network card installed in your system at one end, and a wire that connects to a wired connection like Ethernet, cable connection etc.

Setting up a wireless network is a four-step process:

* Firstly, a choice has to be made for choosing equipment for your wireless network. This equipment can be chosen based on technologies like 802.11 a, 802.11 b or 802.11 g protocols. The equipment must include a computer or laptop with a built-in type of wireless network adapter card, routers and an internet connection. A network card is an instrument that connects the wireless router to your computer. The router is an instrument that converts signals from the Internet connection in to wireless signals.

* Secondly, the wireless router has to be connected to the modem. Unless the router is properly connected to the modem, it will not be able to transmit signals to other computers in the network.

* The router then needs to be configured where the configuration varies from one make of the router to another. For example, a 3Com router will have a different address and password as compared to D-link router.

* The last step is to connect the computer to the network through the wireless network adapter card. Either the computer has a built-in type of network card else it can be plugged in to the USB port and place the antennae on the computer's top.

It is evident that after reading this article how to set up a wireless network for your home would not be a difficult task for you any longer. A wireless network, whether for home use or office use, needs to be protected for security to ensure that the private data is secure and there is no one other than authorized users who can access your wireless networks.
