Tips To Secure Wireless Networks

In the days of highly advanced technology, the Internet has become an undisputed and supreme source of information and knowledge. A more advanced form is the wireless Internet connection. It is very important to secure wireless networks which make it possible to use the Web without the limitations of wires. Only secured wireless networks ensure that you get the optimum advantage of the connection.

Now, the question arises: how to secure wireless networks? Does it need any special skills or just knowledge of some basic steps?

Well, you dont have to learn rocket science to protect your wireless networks. Following a few simple steps can actually protect your network and make it safe to transfer information and avoid leakage too. Here are some necessary steps to take while setting up your network.

1. Whenever you set up your wireless network, the most important thing is to change the default password for the access points (APs) and wireless routers. These generally come with a password that is a manufacturer's name or something similar to that. These default passwords are easy to break and they make your network susceptible to attacks. You should give it a unique password and remember it for future use also. This locks your APs.

2. It is advisable to use Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) instead of the Wired Equivalency Privacy (WEP) encryption. The WEP encryption is well known for its loopholes. This makes it easy for other users to crack the code and enter into your network. On the other hand, the WPA encryption is a better option as it more easy to use and provides fairly effective protection to the wireless networks. Almost all latest hardware and operating systems come with built-in WPA support.

3. But there are some wireless devices which only support WEP encryption. What should be done in that case? You have to consider the fact that WEP encryption is still better than nothing. And when you use WEP encryption, you should change the encryption keys once in a week.

4. Earlier, people used Internet Protocol addresses but nowadays, MAC addresses are preferred. These MAC addresses are unique for specific network adapters. This means that when you turn on the MAC filtering, it limits the access of the device to your systems only. It is not a full proof method for securing wireless networks but surely it adds another hurdle for the intruders.

5. The location of the wireless routers and access points of your wireless networks play a vital role in determining the security factor of the networks. The further the signal reaches, the easier it becomes for people to intrude into your network path. Therefore, they should be kept away from the windows.

So you see, it isnt as difficult as you may have imagined. With these simple and easy-to-follow steps, you can secure wireless networks.
