Understanding Wireless Network Security Setup

Wireless networking has become popular amongst the users in the last few years. It would definitely be beneficial for you only if you take into consideration the security factor of the network. There are a few things to keep in mind while doing a wireless network security setup. All you need to do is to have the knowledge of these fairly simple steps and follow them. Lets have a look at all these steps that can secure your wireless network.

1. Whenever you set up your wireless network connection for the very first time, it comes with a default password for the wireless router and the access points. It is important that you change these passwords. You should give a unique password the access points and the router. This is important because the default passwords are easy to track and that is why any unauthorized intruder can hack it.

2. The second essential thing to do is to decide the location of the access points for your wireless connections. You should place them far away from the windows and exterior walls. Some of the wireless access points have the flexibility for adjustments in signal strength and direction. You can make changes in both of them.

3. You should use MAC filtering for the purpose of access control. The MAC addresses are more secure than the IP addresses. This is because the MAC addresses are unique for specific network adapters. Thus, when you turn on the MAC filtering, it limits the network access only to your systems. Although MAC filtering can be imitated by a genius hacker, it can still act as an obstacle for many.

4. In the recent times, Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is more advanced encryption than the Wired Equivalency Privacy (WEP). Hence, it is better to use WPA encryption rather than the other one. But in case, you are not able to install the WPA encryption, opt for the WEP.

5. Remember to make changes with the Service Set Identifiers (SSIDs). You should turn off the SSID broadcast function. It gives more opportunities to the unauthorized intruders to interfere in your network.

6. Keep in mind that the latest technique used for the security of wireless network connections is the Wi-Fi access points. These allow you the facility to disable the SSID broadcast feature.

7. You should also enable firewall programs which will ensure the effectiveness of the wireless network security setup. Turn off the network if you dont intend to use it for a long time.

By following the above mentioned steps, you can be confident that you are doing the right things. With this kind of wireless network security setup, you will be free from anxieties about security. So go ahead and work freely on your wireless network without any worries!
